Sun Disk – Grätzel-Zelle

Grätzel cell – Innovative Solar Technology
The ‚Sun-Disk, a solar sculpture made of “Grätzel-cells” that generates electricity, can be found on the roof of the breathe pavilion. The dye-sensitized solar cell is a novel technology that works on the principle of photosynthesis and converts light directly into electrical energy. The organic dyes between two glass plates are used for the absorption of light, which can convert even normal daylight or artificial light into energy, in addition to direct sunlight. The Styrian company SFL technologies has implemented the world’s largest plant with Grätzel-cells for the Expo 2015. Both sides of the transparent Grätzel energy glasses harvest energy. With an average harvest efficiency of 4%, on a sunny day, the 42m2 of cells produce 20kWh energy, through which the Sun disk can be illuminated all night with 2.4 kW LED lights.

The concept and design of the Sun-Disk was made by team.breathe.austria.

Quotes from Mario Müller, CEO FIBAG/SFL technologies:
“The dye-sensitized solar cell is an innovative glass technology. Based on the principle of photosynthesis light is converted into electrical energy.”
“It is currently the most innovative solar energy solution and is a world first”

Grätzel-Zelle – Innovative Solar Technologie
