team.breathe.austria from Graz, Austria, won the Grand Award of US$30,000 and an opportunity to display their works at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris in May next year when the awarding ceremony is being planned to be held.

Shenzhen Design Award For Young Talents
The design award called Shenzhen Design Award for Young Talents (SZ+DAY) was held for the second time by the Shenzhen City of Design Promotion Office and the Shenzhen City of Design Promotion Association (SDPA) in association and cooperation with UNESCO Creative Cities Network. This year’s competition was themed “Transformation: the Mission of Design”.

According to SDPA, the goal of the design award was to encourage global young designers to make contributions to create greener, more environmentally friendly and sustainable cities. The project also aims to encourage exchange between young talents from different countries, cooperation between creative cities, and the sharing of experiences and ideas for developing creative and cultural industries.

Am Pavillon Vorplatz pflanzte Dr. Heinz Fischer einen Schwarzkiefer Baum. Weitere Highlights des ‘Austrian National Day’ waren eine Performance des jungen Enssembles Federspiel im Pavillon, die Eröffnung der ‘austrian design explosion’ im Triennale Museum Mailand und die Aufführung der “Sinfonie Nr. 3″ von Gustav Mahler durch die Wiener Philharmoniker im Teatro alla Scala, Dirigent Mariss Jansons (Wohltätigkeitskonzert für das italienische Rote Kreuz).

Grätzel-Zelle – Innovative Solar Technologie
Am Dach des Breathe Pavillons befindet sich die “Sun-Disk”, eine Solarskulptur aus Grätzel-Zellen die Strom erzeugt. Die Farbstoff-Solarzelle ist eine weltweit neuartige Technologie, die nach dem Prinzip der Photosynthese arbeitet und Licht direkt in elektrische Energie umwandelt. Dabei werden organische Farbstoffe zwischen zwei Glasplatten zur Absorption von Licht verwendet, welche neben dem direkten Sonnenlicht auch normales Tageslicht oder Kunstlicht in Energie umwandeln. Das steirische Unternehmen SFL technologies hat für die Expo 2015 die weltweit bisher größte Anlage mit Grätzel-Zellen umgesetzt. Die Fläche der Energiegläser mit Grätzeltechnologie beträgt 42m², transparent und beidseitig erntefähig. Mit einer durchschnittlichen Ernteeffizienz von 4% ergibt dies an einem sonnigen Tag ca. 20kWh an geernteter Energie – damit kann die Sun Disc die ganze Nacht über mit 2,4 kW LED-Beleuchtung zum Strahlen gebracht werden.

The internationally renowned Austrian sound artist, Sam Auinger, was invited to complete the visitor experience of the pavilion on the auditory level. Sam Auinger on the auditive design of the pavilion:
As a structural frame of a vegetal body, the pavilion has a living character. For this to be tangible, it makes sense for the auditive design to align with the realities and necessities of the pavilion, as well as its topic and presentation, in order to create a holistic experience!
Auditive design focuses its attention on the perceptibility of space… how we experience space, through listening. Our sense of space lies in our sense of hearing. This substantially shapes the atmospheric element of our sensory perception of built spaces.

Conceptually, the auditive design for the Austrian Pavilion is divided in two areas:
1. raumfarbe [spatial color] ‘BREATHE AUSTRIA’
This work emerges in the interplay of the pavilion’s architectural form and materiality, and all of the natural, technical and media sound events taking place inside. After a careful analysis of the particular circumstances, the aim was to compose a spatial color, or auditory hue – to design an atmosphere that would animate visitors to move through the space with an attitude of curiosity, consideration and attention.
It consists of a harmonically rich mixture of naturally-produced sounds (8 different tracks of bowed electric upright bass played by Hannes Strobl) and algorithmically generated electronic sounds (using a reactor patch). What results is a composite sound that is simultaneously static and dynamic, and whose auditory impression remains consistent. The sonic material was recorded on site by Sam Auinger and Hannes Strobl and mixed according to existing conditions in the space.
2. Choreography of sprayed mist in conjunction with the ventilator system
(implementation:  transsolar / Martin Engelhardt, Wolfgang Kessling; raintime / Alfred Janousek)
“On the design level, it was about giving the listening space a geography as well as a time structure. The technical systems necessary for life support of the forest, such as the circular mist machines, produce visible and audible movement in the space. Their intensity depends on respective environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity. ”
“To connect the pavilion’s architecture with its living interior, the spatial color and misting / ventilation systems had to sonically relate to each other. (The spatial color BREATHE AUSTRIA could only be developed and attuned with regard to these functional noise emissions and their sonority.)
Generally, the spatial color supports the architectural idea in its entire manifestation, the choreography of perceptible, audible, and visual technical infrastructure in the forest. It underlines the pavilion’s hybrid character and refers to the vitality and performed nature of its internal landscape.
With a calm complexity, an auditive design that is always considering the overall situation aims to support an atmosphere of experience and discovery, and to reward individual curiosity, attention, and mindfulness for the site and its happenings.”

Mit Sam Auinger wurde ein international renommierter österreichischer Klangkünstler gefunden, der das Besucher – Erlebnis im Pavillon auf auditiver Ebene komplettiert. Sam Auinger zum auditiven Design des Pavillons:
um den lebendigen charakter des pavillons als baulichen rahmen um einen vegetationskoerper erfahrbar zu machen, ist es sinnvoll die auditive gestaltung nach den gegebenheiten und notwendigkeiten des pavillons und seiner thematik/inszenierung auszurichten, um ein ganzheitliches erlebnis zu erzeugen!
auditives design hat im zentrum seiner aufmerksamkeit die erlebbarkeit von raum… wie wir raum (hoerend) erleben. im hoersinn liegt der raumsinn. es gestaltet wesentlich das atmosphaerische element des gebauten raums in seiner sinnlichen wahrnehmung.

die auditive gestaltung für den oesterreichischen pavillon unterteilt sich konzeptuell in 2 bereiche:
1. raumfarbe ‘BREATHE AUSTRIA’
“sie entsteht im wirkungszusammenhang von form und materialitaet der pavillon architektur und aller darin stattfindenden natuerlichen, technischen und medialen klangereignisse.
nach genauer analyse dieser gegebenheiten galt es eine auditive raumfarbe zu komponieren, eine atmosphaere zu gestalten, die die besucherinnen zu einem sich mit neugier, bedacht und aufmerksamkeit im raum bewegenden verhalten animiert. es handelt sich dabei um ein obertonreiches klanggemisch aus natuerlich erzeugten klaengen (8 verschieden gestrichene e-kontrabass spuren gespielt von hannes strobl) und algorithmisch erzeugten elektronischen klaengen (reaktor patch). es entsteht ein zugleich statischer wie dynamischer klang der in seiner auditiven anmutung gleich bleibt.
dieses klangmaterial wurde vor ort von sam auinger und hannes strobl aufgenommen und auf die konkreten gegebenheiten im raum gemischt.”

“auf dieser designebene ging es darum dem hoerraum sowohl eine geografie wie eine zeitstruktur zu geben. die notwendigen technischen systeme zur lebenserhaltung des waldes wie bodennebelkreise produzieren sichtbare und hoerbare bewegung im raum. ihre intensitaet richtet sich nach den jeweiligen umweltbedingungen, wie temperatur und luftfeuchtigkeit.”

From the opening of the Milan Expo in early May onwards the visitors to the Austrian Pavilion can immerse themselves in the fresh atmosphere and can experience the performance of the forest with all their senses. More than 12,800 perennials, grasses and forest trees have been installed over three months in the highly complex engineered landscape. The first white spring ambassadors come out from under the leaves and the dandelions spread their seed. The smell of fresh moss and spruce floats in the air … the metabolism – the forest begins. Breathe in!

Die Landschaft – Der Wald – formt aus elf österreichischen Waldökotypen ein einzigartiges atmosphärisches Erlebnis. Die Artenvielfalt der Pflanzen mit mehr als 190 diversen Spezies kreiert ein intensives Zusammenspiel aus Licht – Luft und frischen Gerüchen. Durch technische Unterstützung mit Nebel und feinen Wasserdüsen wird ein einzigartiges Mikroklima erzeugt, welches für die Besucherinnen zum sinnlichen Erlebnis wird.
Anfang Mai – pünktlich zur Eröffnung der Weltausstellung Expo in Mailand –  können die ersten BesucherInnen der Weltausstellung in die frische Atmosphäre eintauchen und die Performanz des Waldes mit allen Sinnen erleben. Mehr als 12800 Stauden, Gräser und Forstgehölze wurden binnen 3 Monaten in die hochkomplexe Ingenieurslandschaft eingebaut. Die ersten weißen Frühlingsbotschafter kommen unter dem Laub hervor und die Pusteblumen verteilen Ihre Samen. Der Geruch von frischem Moos und den frischen Fichtenwipferln schwebt in der Luft … Der Metabolismus – Wald beginnt. Breathe In!

The Austria pavilion in Milan is a showcase project which combines building and the environment. Through the large-scale planting of 560m² of forest, ‘breathe’ creates a complex network of people, the environment and climate.

The exterior space in the interior

The pavilion forms a frame around a generous vegetation body and acts as a vessel for the performance of the internal landscape. With technical assistance the framed shape produces the microclimate of an Austrian forest. Wherever light enters the built structure, ecological growth and metabolism takes place. The vegetation of the forest area has a leaf surface area of ​​about 43.200m² which generates 62.5kg of oxygen per hour, enough to meet the demand for 1,800 people and thus contributing to global oxygen production. This process is technically supported by evaporative cooling but is entirely free of air conditioners.

In this way a dense Austrian forest can be recreated with comparativly natural measures, that is based on the cooling effect of evapo-transpiration of plants and the forest soil. The achieved climatic result differs significantly from the entcountered air and climate in Milan and becomes perceptable.

Showcase Project

The 100 percent planting of forest vegetation is an exemplary contribution to urban conduct, as the integral use of landscape can provide urban forms of life with enough oxygen and cooled air. This example highlights Austria’s sustainable afforestation policy, but also its reverse in the worldwide decline in the number of life-giving trees.

An Open Source ‚air generating station’

The pavilion represents viewing technology and natural environments as a whole picture, that could inspire numerous other projects. The Austrian Pavilion creates a place which connects the seemingly incompatible; technology and natural diversity. Austria demonstrates that hybrid systems of nature and technology can be ecologically successful.

The pavilion as a prototype acts as an intermediary which encourages discourse and ideas on renewable energy, smart cities, Cradle 2 Cradle, Zero-Carbon and Green-Tech. The pavilion as ‘air generating station’ can act as a climate stabiliser and can be functionally integrated into urban areas at different scales worldwide. In cities suffering from bad air pollution, such fresh air spaces could form oases throughout the city.

Energy independence and climate positive

An important aspect of the pavilion is its energy neutrality, meaning that the pavilion generates as much energy as it consumes. The electrical energy needed to power the building infrastructure (water pumps, kitchen, lighting, etc.) is supplied by a photovoltaic system (PV) on the roof and a solar sculpture with ‘Grätzel-cells’ (dye solar cells), an innovative technology that can be seen for the first time in this form. The excess energy is fed into the Italian power grid. Through its climate and oxygen production the pavilion is climate positive.

Encounter Innovative Austria

Austrian technologies, know-how and cusine all have a presence in the pavilion. The spectrum ranges from innovative solar technology to vegetation, from climate- and sound-design to Austria’s most innovative forest cuisine. Based on traditional Austrian dishes several top chefs from Koch.Campus have created “dishes, that are based on typical food from the forest” say chefs Heinz Reitbauer junior. (Steirereck, Vienna), Helmut and Philip Rachinger (Mühltalhof, Neufelden), Thomas Dorfer and Tobias Wussler (Landhaus Bacher, Mautern) and Harald Irka (Saziani Stubn).

Dishes such as ‚wood flour bread with spruce tops-butter‘, ‚wild pine cones‘ and ‚forest-magnum”, a forest-honey ice-cream with cranberry cream, wrapped in dark chocolate and roasted hazelnuts are spoiling the visitors in the Bar d’atmosfera and in the VIP area.

Die Architektur. Gebäudekörper als Landschaft

Der Österreich Pavillon in Mailand verbindet Gebäude und Umwelt zu einem integralen Beitrag: Durch die großflächige Bepflanzung des Waldstücks mit der Grundfläche von 560m2 stellt breathe ein vielschichtiges Beziehungsnetz von Menschen, Umwelt und Klima her.

Der Außenraum im Innenraum

Der Pavillon bildet einen Rahmen um einen großzügigen Vegetationskörper und fungiert als Gefäß für die Performanz der innen liegenden Landschaft. Mit technischer Unterstützung (aber ohne Klimageräte) erzeugt die gerahmte Form aktiv die Mikroklimakondition eines österreichischen Waldes. Dort wo innerhalb des gebauten Rahmens Licht einfällt findet Wachstum und ökologischer Metabolismus statt.

Die Vegetation des Waldstücks besitzt eine gesamte Blattoberfläche bzw. Verdunstungsoberfläche von ca. 43.200m2 und erzeugt dabei 62,5 kg frischen Sauerstoff pro Stunde – dem Bedarf für 1800 Personen – ein „Photosynthesekollektor“ also, der zur weltweiten Sauerstoffproduktion beiträgt. Dieser Effekt wird im Pavillon durch Verdunstungskühlung – aber ohne Klimageräte – technisch unterstützt. So kann das gefühlte Klima eines dichten Waldes aus Österreich mit vergleichsweise natürlichen Maßnahmen nachgestellt werden, der auf den kühlende Effekt der Evapo-Transpiration der Pflanzen und des Waldbodens beruht. Das erzielte Ergebnis unterscheidet sich auf unterschiedlichen Sinnesebenen deutlich von der vorgefundenen Luft und Klima in Mailand und wird dadurch wahrnehmbar.

Modellhafter Beitrag

Die 100prozentige Waldbepflanzung ist ein modellhafter Beitrag für urbane Handlungsweisen, denn der integrale Einsatz von Landschaft kann urbane Lebensformen mit genügend Sauerstoff und kühlender Luft versorgen, wodurch wiederum auf Österreichs nachhaltige Aufforstungspolitik verwiesen werden kann oder in Umkehrung auf den weltweiten Rückgang von lebensnotwendigem Baumbestand.

Open Source ‚Luftkraftwerk’

Der Pavillon steht für das Zusammendenken von Technologie und natürlichen Lebensumgebungen, das zu zahlreichen weiteren Projekten inspirieren kann. Mit dem Österreich Pavillon wird ein Ort geschaffen, der scheinbar unvereinbares – Technologie und natürliche Vielfalt – verbindet und zudem klimaaktiv ist.

Österreich zeigt auf – mit hybriden Systemen aus Natur und Technik kann man ökologisch erfolgreich sein.

Der Pavillon als Prototyp regt als Vermittler Diskurse und Ideen in Richtung erneuerbare Energie, Smart Cities, Cradle 2 Cradle, Zero-Carbon, Green-Tech an. Der Pavillon als ‘Luftkraftwerk’ kann in unterschiedlichen Maßstäben in diversen Ballungsräumen weltweit als Klimaverbesserer wirken und im städtischen Raum funktional integriert werden. In Städten mit hoher Luftverschmutzung könnten solche Frischlufträume Oasen in der ganzen Stadt bilden.

Energienautarkie und klimapositiv

Ein wichtiger Aspekt des Pavillon ist die Energieneutralität, d.h. der Pavillon erzeugt gleich viel Energie wie er verbraucht. Die notwendige elektrische Energie zur Versorgung der Gebäudeinfrastruktur (Wasserpumpen, Küche, Beleuchtung etc.) wird durch eine Photovoltaikanlage (PV) am Dach sowie einer Solar-Skulptur aus Grätzelzellen (Farbstoffsolarzelle), eine innovative Technologie, die erstmals in dieser Form weltweit zu sehen ist. Die überschüssige Energie wird in das italienische Stromnetz eingespeist.

Durch die Klima-Perfomanz und Sauerstoff Produktion ist der Pavillon klimapositiv.

Innovatives Österreich begegnen

Österreichische Technologien, Know-How und Kulinarik werden sind im Pavillon präsent. Das Spektrum reicht von innovativer Solar- und Vegetationstechnik, Klima – und Sound Design bis hin zu Österreichs innovativster Waldkulinarik, welche die BesucherInnen verwöhnt.

Not only is Austria’s air quality very high by world standards and one of the countries most important characteristics, but air, climate and atmosphere connect also the entire planet. They are considered nutrients, information carriers, energy producers and resources.

The Austrian pavillion ‚breathe‘ presents not only the natural and technical expertise of the country, but is also devoted to addressing future problems in dealing with these important raw materials. The Austrian forest planted at the Expo site acts as a sensual air and climate experience in a former industrial area in north-west Milan.

In the center of the pavilion there is a 560 m2 large forest vegetation area, which merges architecture, nature, culture and research into a sensual experience and produces an intense forest climate which generates clean, oxygen-rich air.
